I would say that I’m a person that is difficult to shock or surprise. I’ve been lot of places, met a lot of people and I’ve seen a lot of things. I’ve been to Mardi gras; I live in a town that is home to a Big Ten University for crying out loud – I’ve seen it all! So when a friend of mine posted an article about vaginal steaming on Facebook, I was surprised that I had no clue what the heck it was. Surely this must be some kind of feminist protest art? It turns out that I was way off base as to what vaginal steaming is. So, here’s the skinny on “V” steaming.
So, yeah – vaginal steaming is basically a steam bath for your vajayjay. Of course, it’s not regular steam, but a steam bath that is infused with ancient herbs in order to “detox” your lady bits. If you get one done professionally, you essentially sit on a mini-throne and have your vagina and uterus steamed in order to cleanse your uterus. Some even claim it balances female hormones.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have to tell you that I am a proud skeptic. I am not into woo or any other kind of holistic therapy that has no scientific proof behind its efficacy. I also feel I owe it to every single one of you to find out the best information and pass it on to you, so I dug up a little bit about vaginal steaming – I even called my gynecologist’s office. I had to get to the bottom of this whole thing. I mean, if it actually worked then I wanted in on it! It turns out, however, that v-steaming isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Or steamed up to be, I suppose.
I Heart Science
My doctor told me that there’s absolutely no scientific evidence to show that vaginal steaming does anything positive for you. In fact, it could lead to some pretty unpleasant side effects. You have to remember that your vagina is fairly incredible without a steam, because it cleanses itself. Vaginal steaming seems to be right up there with douching as something that is neither recommended nor needed in order to keep your vagina and reproductive system healthy. If you disrupt your vagina’s natural cleansing process then that can lead to imbalances in its flora. You can then make yourself susceptible to things like bacterial vaginosis. With vaginal steaming, you also have to think about the risk of burns. I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of any place on my body I would love more to avoid burns on than my vagina. No thank you.
Just Say No
After I talked to my doctor and read information about the vaginal steam clean, I couldn’t help but think that this is just one more of those messages that we get from popular culture that wants to portray the vagina as unclean. Women should not be embarrassed of their natural odor, or the natural cleansing properties of their vaginas.
I think all of us should just say no to vaginal steaming and recognize that our vaginas aren’t only fabulous, but they work. They smell like they’re supposed to, they look like they should. And any discomfort that we feel when our periods roll around once a month is just one of those things that we go through in our lives that add character! So, avoid the vaginal steam. If someone suggests it, just go have a margarita somewhere else instead.
